How to clean window blinds
For any office, if you have window blinds it’s vital you clean them regularly otherwise they will begin to gather dust, and you will develop an unclean environment.
Some employees believe a quick wipe of the blinds will do the trick, however, this is incorrect. There is much more to do to clean your blinds properly, and today we will tell you how.
Different types of blinds & how to clean them
To understand how to clean your blinds, it’s important to know the different types, as different products need cleaning in a certain way. Separate cleaning materials will be needed because the same product will not work for every type of blind. Routine maintenance and cleaning ensure they last longer but also enhance the cleanliness image of your office.
There are four different types of blinds available: cotton, synthetic fabric, faux wooden and wooden, all of which need cleaning in a strict manner.
Cotton
If you have cotton blinds in your office then you should clean them by hand washing or put them in the washing machine. However, to prevent damage to the blinds, do not put them in the washing machine regularly as heavy water could damage the material. Cotton blinds tend to get dirty quickly, so cleaning them regularly is a necessity.
Synthetic fabric
It can be difficult to clean synthetic fabric blinds as they’re very delicate. If you decide to clean them yourself, be careful not to overwash them as you can easily damage the blind without realising it. You can remove the dust with a damp cloth, or if you want to conduct a deep clean then remove the blinds from the railing.
However, we would advise you to hire professionals as they can clean the blind without any stress or hassle.
Faux wooden
Whilst they may look stylish and enhance the image of a room, faux wooden blinds still require a good clean frequently. You can clean faux wood blinds in two ways, firstly, you can use a microfibre cloth dipped in warm soapy water. This type of blind is manmade, so you will not have to worry about the blind air drying from the water.
Alternatively, you can use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment and gently swipe across each slat. Either solution will clean the blind thoroughly, so we shall let you decide which is best.
Wooden
Unlike faux blinds, regular wooden blinds are not manmade and they will attract moisture. This could lead to the blinds staining easily, however, if you use a damp cloth with warm soapy water, it will remove any stains.
Roller blinds
The beauty of roller blinds is they do not take long to clean. They’re water resistant, so to clean any dust or dirt, use a damp cloth and simply wipe them gently. It’s worth noting you must let them dry before rolling back up, and regularly maintain their cleanliness.
At Office Blinds & Glazing, we offer a huge selection of Roller, Blackout Roller, Venetian and Vertical Blinds available in many styles and fabrics to suit your commercial needs.
Cleaning products you will need
Cleaning your blinds correctly and efficiently is essential to them lasting beyond their usual life date. As long as you keep on top of them, you will not have to replace the blinds often, but it’s crucial you purchase the correct cleaning products so they don’t get damaged. For a quick clean, you can use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a duster. Go over each slat once from top to bottom to remove any dust.
If you would like to deep clean your blinds, then a microfibre cloth with warm soapy water is the best option for you. To clean thoroughly, remove each blind slat, place them in a bathtub and gently rinse them till they’re washed. Once cleaned, dry the slabs with a hairdryer or leave them out in the sun or another warm area.
How often should window blinds be cleaned?
A general rule of thumb when cleaning your blinds is to vacuum them at least once a week. By doing this, it ensures zero dust will build up and removes the problem before it appears. Regularly maintaining this will also keep the blinds in good working order and make them last longer so you do not have to replace them often.
Keeping the blinds in top condition greatly benefits the overall appearance of your office, as clients or inspectors take great pride in examining every area to gather a first impression of your company. Take pride in your window blinds, they’re an important part of the working environment.
Also, don’t forget to clean the rods and cords on the blinds, as these can gather lots of dust and begin to look grubby if neglected. To do this you can use a damp cloth and gently brush over them so you don’t damage them. It’s vital you don’t leave wet blinds to dry on the rods, as this can cause rust and damage other furniture in the surrounding environment.
